Half the time the answer is "well, we've been talking about an EVโฆ" and now the panel conversation is their idea, not yours.
5. "How many open slots are in the panel โ any idea, or is it pretty full?"
A full panel with double-tapped breakers is a physical constraint you can name. "If it's full, we can't just add a circuit โ we'd be looking at a subpanel or a service upgrade" is a true statement that frames the visit accurately.
The difference between a diagnosis and a pitch is who the work serves. If the answer to "do they actually need this?" is yes, you're diagnosing. Ask the questions that let you answer that honestly, and the upsell problem takes care of itself.
What to do on site โ present the real fix, then let them choose
When the flags line up, the tech's job is not to hard-close a panel. It's to fix the immediate problem and lay out the honest picture:
